Portnoy, Kotzen, Sheehan Project To Begin Recording Debut Album Next Month

The work never stops for famed progressive rock drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold, Adrenaline Mob), as he is set to begin recording yet another project next month; this time with guitar virtuoso Richie Kotzen (Mr. Big, Poison) and bass prodigy Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big).

Portnoy announced news of the band's upcoming plans in a post on his official website on Sunday.

"Well, recording has officially begun!" wrote Portnoy. "You may be surprised to hear that for this album with Billy & Richie, I am stripping down my kit and going totally "old-school!

The music for this project is very "classic rock" (as I mentioned in my interview w Eddie Trunk that was quoted elsewhere: think Zeppelin, Cream, Hendrix, Grand Funk, Deep Purple with a touch of modern bands like Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Lenny Kravitz, Black Crowes)...so I really wanted to cop the right vibe and have a kit to make me stay in that style of playing."

Portnoy recently returned from the road after a two month tour with his current project, Adrenaline Mob, in support of the band's latest release, "Omerta". The band also features singer Russell Allen of Symphony X fame, bassist John Moyer from Disturbed and solo guitarist Mike Orlando

Kotzen, meanwhile, is currently playing select dates this month in the Los Angeles area in support of his 14th studio album, "24 Hours", released late last year.

Sheehan and fellow members of Mr. Big regrouped last year to release the band's first new album in over ten years, "What if...", which preceded an extensive tour of Europe and Asia.
