Gibson Crowns Tony Iommi Greatest Metal Guitarist In New List

Gibson Guitars released its list of top-ten metal guitarists this week, crowning famed Black Sabbath axeman Tony Iommi at number one.

"Tony Iommi’s dark, distinct guitar textures in Black Sabbath helped spearhead the heavy metal movement and its signature massive riffing," read the article.“'Iron Man' 'Black Sabbath' and 'Paranoid' boast some of the most memorable riffs of all time, with lumbering heavy metal and crushingly heavy choruses. Iommi’s playing is certainly immortalized through the generations of heavy metal bands that have followed."

Iommi suffered a now-infamous injury at the age of 17, severing the tips of his middle and ring finger on his right hand in a sheet metal factory accident. In turn, he has adapted using lighter gauge guitar strings and employs the use of leather thimbles to extend his finger tips.

Black Sabbath's original lineup — minus drummer Bill Ward — have been working on their first studio album since 1978's Never Say Die! The band also planned to embark on a reunion tour last November, however, was forced to cancel all but two dates after Iommi was diagnosed with cancer.
